Marnie’s Tables

Live Oak, Quercus virginiana Mill., Limbs are amazing!  Imagine growing horizontally (rather than vertically like a trunk) for 100 years or so.  Imagine the internal structure required to hold up hundreds of pounds against gravity pulling sideways on every inch of length.  Then add to that the tangle of fibers that are formed as the branch bends and twists its way around obstacles into the sunshine.

Live Oak Limbs - Incidental Tables    We take orders

July 30, 2010

Live Oak Limb Heart is very light in color and full of stress splits.  The outer layer, or sapwood, is dark and gnarly; full of whorls and burled inclusions.  All of these things create lumber with incredible character.   It also makes slices of limbs (called Flitches) very likely to shrink unevenly and warp their way into hyperspace.  --Which is why few craftsmen will work with them.   Marnie Hutcheson takes a long view and a patient approach to her craft, working with the wood, rather than trying to force it into some new form.  The results are lasting and very satisfying.
